Spring is in the air, and we are all stepping out into the world (woop-woop!). But it’s been an unusual time (and still is), so it makes sense we are all feeling a bit unusual ourselves. We are also coming up to Christmas which is typically a hectic time for many. It’s time to consistently “shake it off” (cue Taylor Swift).
The key to “shaking it off” (lol) is ongoing self care. And extra lashings of it(!), so we can come back to internal equilibrium. Because the fact is that our minds, bodies and emotional world have all had a bit of a knock. US-Based Psychotherapist and adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University Denise Fournier, uses practices from both Western science and Eastern traditions (Zen Buddhism and Taoism) in her work.
Her article in Psychology Today titled “20 Ways to Stay Steady in These Shaky Times”, outlines a great list of self-care go-to’s!
We’ve selected some of our favourites, and added a couple of our own:
- Relax your jaw and give your arms and legs a little shake out when you feel a bit overwhelmed by anything (can be small or large).
- Jump in the ocean!
- Set limits on your consumption of news and social media. Try putting your phone in another room for a day a week.
- Try your best to get 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night.
- Make a habit of meditation or breathwork practices, even just a simple deep exhale through gently pursed lips does wonders.
- Keep essential oils nearby (lavender, cedarwood, and frankincense are very helpful for soothing and grounding). Just rub 1-2 drops into your palms, bring your hands a few cm’s from your face, and take in a few rounds of breath. Deep inhales!
- Include lots of wholefoods in your diet.
- Make a habit of spending time on the things that make you feel relaxed and joyful.
- Practice grounding exercises (such as tuning in to your five senses, one at a time).

Take it easy 🙂
