Scents to Keep you Zen (and Sleepy!)

Have some essential oils on a shelf somewhere? Finding it hard to sleep lately? Perhaps it’s time for a scent revival!

The importance of a good night’s sleep has never been as vital as it is now. According to The Guardian, 70 years ago less than 8% of the population was trying to survive on six hours or less sleep a night, and by 2017 almost one in two people wasn’t getting enough shuteye.

The American Sleep Association (ASA) promotes essential oils for sleep; for their healing and calming effects that induce a deeper slumber.

The ASA explains:

Essential oils are natural compounds that are extracted from plants.  These oils have been around for centuries and are used in many cultures for medicinal purposes, cooking, perfumes, and cosmetics.

A number of studies have shown that certain herbs can keep cortisol levels in check and restore calm to the nervous system (thehealthy.com). Go-to essential oils for that lovely restful sleep include:

Frankincense oil – a beautiful pre-bedtime grounding scent that has been used throughout the ages.

Roman chamomile oil – best known as a tea, Roman chamomile oil can also be wonderful for inducing a good night’s sleep, and has even been proven to reduce nightmares!

Rose oil – used in everything from perfumes to night creams. Rose oil is not only relaxing, but has been shown to relieve anxiety, stress, and depression. It is also one of the recommended essential oils for sleep as it can help promote feelings of tranquility and security.

Lavender oil – A number of studies have shown that lavender essential oil improves sleep quality, and alleviates symptoms associated with mild insomnia and restlessness. Often found in bedtime sprays to help the little ones nod off as well.

Diffusers are wonderful ways to inhale your favourite calming fragrance. You can also gently apply a drop of your favourite oil to your hands and breathe it in as you lay down on your pillow (note: it is best to dilute concentrated oils with a carrier oil such as apricot oil or almond oil before application).

Alternatively, wear your favourite oil as a personal fragrance throughout the day, keeping you chill as you go about your daily activities.

Breathe in….. breathe out and enjoy the Zen vibes!
