Let’s raise a glass to the end of 2020! It’s Christmas, and time to share meals with friendly (mask-free!) faces. But what to buy our beloved friends and family this year? This is the top question on many of our minds right now.
The wheel of consumerism seems less enticing for some reason, as many of us have slowed down over the last months and taken pleasure in the small things (the local park, our close family, baked treats).
The Stable Team has come up with three tips for sustainable gifts:
Shop locally. In 2020 we all came together and beat ‘the virus’. Many of us found ourselves shopping locally (as we couldn’t leave 5km for some time anyway!). Walking down the road to buy your Christmas gifts supports local business, and reduces your carbon footprint at the same time (bonus!). So put on those walking shoes, grab a latte and peruse your neighbourhood shopping strip for Aussie made pressies.
Support a cause. Some people have struggled more than others this year. Asylum seekers have had a particularly hard time, with no government support to help get them through. Demand has never been higher. Giving to a cause such as the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) on behalf of a loved one, can be a great contribution to those in need. Check out the ASRC ‘Ways to Give’ page.
Give an experience. An experience can be a wonderful non-physical gift. No risk of landfill, and the list is endless! Movie vouchers, an overnight Airbnb, dinner at a favourite restaurant, a massage, soaking in hot springs, enrolling in yoga sessions or pottery classes, the list goes on. You could also get creative and write a handwritten voucher for a day trip with a loved one, or for any experience you’ve been meaning to share together.
Have a relaxing festive season with family and friends!
The Stable Team.
